Plan about 4 square feet per bird inside the coop and about 10 in the run, with roosts, nest boxes, and good ventilation.
Use hardware cloth, not chicken wire, and close the coop every night. Raccoons, foxes, and hawks are common threats.
Give layers a complete layer feed, fresh water daily, and oyster shell for calcium. Treats should stay a small share of the diet.
Hardy and good foragers. They need water deep enough to dunk their heads, and they make a mess of it.
Quiet and efficient. They need shade, protection from heat, and clean hutches.
Social animals, so keep at least two. They need strong fencing, shelter, and hoof care.
Pollinate the garden and produce honey. A local beekeeping club is the best place to start.
